What this actually is

INSURANCE YOU BUY, for crops with no federal crop insurance available — fruits, vegetables, aquaculture, floriculture, mushrooms, turfgrass, ginseng, honey, maple sap. Catastrophic coverage is 50% of approved yield at 55% of average market price; buy-up goes to 65% of yield at 100% of price with an added premium. Service fee $325 per crop per county, capped at $825 per producer per county or $1,950 across counties.

Who qualifies, and what trips people up

You must apply by the CROP-SPECIFIC closing date — miss it and there is no coverage, with no remedy. The recurring trap across all FSA disaster programs is the acreage report: file it on time or the loss is not payable.
