What this actually is

Education benefits you earned by serving: the full cost of public in-state tuition and fees, a monthly housing allowance based on the school’s location if you attend more than half-time, and a yearly books and supplies stipend. It also covers tutorial assistance, national exam reimbursement, licensing and certification tests, and work-study. Standard entitlement is 36 months, with up to 48 months available through certain provisions. Not a loan. The housing allowance is the part people underestimate — for many students it is the larger benefit, and it depends on rate of pursuit and on attending in person.

Who qualifies, and what trips people up

At least 90 days of active duty after September 10, 2001; or a Purple Heart after that date with an honourable discharge; or 30+ continuous days after that date with an honourable discharge for a service-connected disability; or as a dependent receiving transferred benefits. Time limits depend on discharge date — separated before January 1, 2013 means a 15-year window; later discharges have no expiration under the Forever GI Bill. Licensing and certification test reimbursement is widely unused; ask about it.
