GRANTFederally funded help with home energy: heating bills, cooling bills, energy crises, weatherization and minor energy-related home repairs. It is assistance, not a loan — you do not repay it. LIHEAP funds can prevent a shutoff, reconnect service that has already been cut, and repair or replace heating equipment. The crisis component is the one to ask for by name when a shutoff notice is in your hand; it moves faster than the regular benefit. Money usually goes straight to the utility rather than to you.
Income limits and application processes are set by each state, territory or tribe, and funds are finite — many states open applications on a date and close when money runs out, which is the thing that catches people. Apply through your state or tribal LIHEAP office, not through HHS. Renters whose heat is included in rent are often still eligible; ask.
