Federal Work-Study

What this actually is

Work-Study is a JOB, not a grant. The statute (20 U.S.C. § 1087-51) describes its purpose as stimulating and promoting part-time employment for students who need the earnings to pay for their education. You are awarded an amount you are allowed to EARN, and you receive it only as wages for hours actually worked. That is the misunderstanding that costs students money every year: seeing the figure on an award letter and budgeting it as though it had already arrived. It has not. You must find and take the job, and the award is a ceiling on earnings, not a payment. The statute also directs the programme toward community-service work — healthcare, literacy training, housing, public safety, mentoring.

Who qualifies, and what trips people up

Financial need established by the FAFSA, at a participating school — again, not every school participates. Undergraduate, graduate and professional students can be eligible. Jobs are limited and go quickly at the start of term; apply for the position the moment the award appears, and ask the aid office what happens to unearned award money (usually nothing — it simply goes unpaid).
