TAX CREDIT

What this actually is

A tax credit that lowers what you pay each month for a Marketplace health plan. It is a tax credit, not a grant — which matters, because it is calculated on the income you ESTIMATE for the coverage year and then reconciled against your actual income when you file. If you earn more than you estimated, you pay some of it back at tax time. That is the single most common and most painful surprise in this program, and the fix is free: update your income in your Marketplace account the moment it changes, rather than waiting for the tax return. Note the base it uses — your estimate for the year you want coverage, not last year's income — so a recent job loss counts in your favour immediately. Also: the credit can be taken in advance each month against the premium, or all at once on your return; taking it monthly is what makes coverage affordable now.

Who qualifies, and what trips people up

Start from your household's adjusted gross income (Form 1040, line 11) and adjust it for expected changes; count yourself, your spouse if married, and everyone you will claim as a tax dependent, including those who do not need coverage. Catastrophic plans get no credit at any income. If you qualify for Medicaid or CHIP, you take that instead. If you are offered affordable employer coverage, that generally disqualifies you. Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage begins November 1 — but losing other coverage, moving, marrying, or having a baby opens a Special Enrollment Period outside that window, so do not wait until November if something changed. If you think the eligibility result is wrong, you have the right to appeal the Marketplace decision.
