What this actually is

Dial 211 from any phone and a local specialist will search what is actually funded and open in your county right now — rent and utility help, food, healthcare costs, mental health, substance use, disaster recovery, caregiver support. Free and confidential. It is the single most useful phone number on this page for someone with no money today, because it is the only one that knows which local funds have money left this week. Both the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Treasury now point renters here after the federal rental assistance program ended. It is not money and it makes no decisions — it is routing. Use it first when you do not know which program you need, and use it again after any denial, because the specialist usually knows the smaller local fund the denying agency did not mention.

Who qualifies, and what trips people up

No eligibility, no income test, no documents, and no cost. Availability and hours vary by locality but most 211s operate around the clock; some areas are text- and chat-enabled and 211.org lets you search online. What programs 211 refers you to have their own rules — 211 tells you what exists, the program decides. Be specific about your deadline (shutoff date, court date, eviction date): specialists triage, and the emergency funds are not the same as the ordinary ones.
